Hey guys, use this comment area to post an image that relates to your question above. You can then click on that image (it opens in a new tab) and copy and past that image link into your question, that way it’s easier for me to answer it. Thanks, Brent
I am submitting this photo for your critique. Do you like it as is or is there anything that you could see in the composition, lighting, clouds etc that would make this photo bigger – better – bolder … that would make this photo stand out? https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/43c365b5a127373d918087d2b4f38fd233d3814f2b1dabacaff43a5430b32c91.jpg
I did some editing to the photo – would like your feedback https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f3d43b09b05f69dc2b13cf4ee1c43cc3d402ca2e0e3ffc9cdfe9d1dc43423a48.jpg
Nice picture and composition.
Thank you @Lonnie
I prefer the first image because of the composition. The sky is an important factor in the strength of the image IMHO. You have some nice leading lines with the cloud formation and water line which take the viewer gaze to the lower third LHS of the image with the birds as the point of interest and main subject.
I would try some post processing to make the clouds pop – a gradient filter with -0.5 EV.
Also add some contrast and check your black and white points to get the full tonal range.
A subtle vignette would help too. I would darken the bottom right corner to lessen the distraction of the driftwood and add some exposure to the area where the birds are standing.
Are you using LR or PS for post processing? Shooting in jpg or RAW? Camera settings?
Thank you for your opinion and critique, I use PS for post processing and shoot jpg and raw but process the raw image for best results.
I prefer original crop with more sky
Ok, I have been thinking about this image and felt that it could be better … I wanted to tell more of a story … The beginning of a journey- The birds on the beach are getting ready to fly into the sun joining the other birds on a grand journey. What do you think of this revised photo https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/30433563f5f779404dc2bd98df9ba747b20257a17e4fec014c10922a973a98ad.jpg
Wow, what a difference with the colour tone and bird flying – more artistic in my opinion and a totally different mood. I like it, Brent
Thank you so much Brent
Hi Brent, I did one final edit to bring the story more into play … I think the composition is better here… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/70dc82a00ccc8de055e847d8e959481ae7e1f24f4f36f752ee15dc05c69e5b41.jpg
Nice Belinda. Moving the flying seagull to the right is good for your story, I agree. Maybe the crop on the left is a bit too much? I did like the sky in the first image (more of it) but I think this interpretation is the best so far.
Thank you Vic
I do like this version, good one.
Thank you John
This is a nice version to.
Thank you Lonnie
Hi Belinda sorry didn’t notice this until now – been so focused on the challenge images. Lovely shot – love that the sea gulls are looking out to sea and the adult with the yellow beak is closer to the camera and stands out. Also like that they have side light on them – gives more of a 3d look. A few things I’d do in post – lighten up beach a little more on the left, maybe just boost the shadows a little. The only distracting element in this scene is the bit of kelp on the beach in my opinion. Great image. Cheers. Brent
Thank you so much Brent, really appreciate your critique

Here is an image I took while walking along the beach late afternoon.
tried to show the force of projection, not sure if I got it https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e46bc0cfc25ddbdf553e0e85289323126f320d331bff7b52a8be1bb6d41af02a.jpg ?
f/14,1/500sec,iso 400, 56mm focal length
I wonder whether the power of the projected sand and water might have
been made even more forceful if the figures at bottom left were a bit
more prominent because they say a lot about the scale of the projected
material as well. Perhaps a point of view further to camera right that
included the figures a little more? If you have cropped the image and
applied a vignette or gradient filter to the right hand side of the
image this has also obscured the figures and lost a bit of the
projection at the top of the image. I also wonder whether a bit of
contrast applied to the projection would make it “heavier”.
Thanks Vic,
I will give it a try
I have altered image as suggested, it looks a lot better
thanks https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/135ced995267b56903115d174951aa286e0271fba56e8db0d97bd06f67b5cde5.jpg

Sorry John, been away.
Have you changed the colour temp as well? The sky has a green tint now because of the warming effect of colour change.
What is the shadow down right hand side of image? Is it a gradient filter? Can that be removed?
What edits did you make and what software are you using for post processing?
sorry about delay replying, I am new to lightroom , in fact photography.
I am not sur exactly what happened, I think maybe I should return to my
original and try again.
Hi @disqus_FB2ImORM70:disqus wow, what a shot! Yes you did show the force and I like how the jet stream is brown against the blue sky and sea. Youve left space to the right which is good, however I’d like a little space above the water spray if possible. What is the main point of interest in this scene? My eye goes to the point where the spray is hitting the water – how can you draw the eye to that spot even more? Brent
Thanks Brent, I have moved closer to point of entry, also added a little more contrast.
I think it works a lot better https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/31910b0d581a5e6d53d805f32ebdf8f2a6e8ff8a1238430faad289c1c458c812.jpg
Settings; 1/25, f.8, ISO=100 with ND0.6 Grad filter on sky. Processed from RAW file in LR. Highlights reduced, medium tone curve applied, small adjustments to noise and sharpen. Light colour corrected with eyedropper on white surfaces. Vignette applied.
The images has been cropped (mainly foreground to focus on the reflection and sky. The power of the colours and the reflection were of course why I took the photo. A wondrous display by nature!
However, is the subject strong enough? Should I have done more with the colour spectrum (eg, the blues)?

Great image @vicboase:disqus wow, those colours are amazing. Not sure what more you can do here – can you upload you original raw image here https://goo.gl/jxatUo and I’ll see what I can do in post. Not sure when I’ll get to it as we have a lot of comments in the BootCamp challenge and I’ve got the magazine to get out too. Brent
Thanks Brent.
I have uploaded the CR2 file as requested to the Google drive link. 10171105- 7170.CR2
Interested on how what you can do.
Great Shot, I like it as it is, looks very natural.

Brent. Here’s the picture related to the question, how can I improve this image? Thanks, Jim https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/994e36c08fa2df483a85bc03daffe6ac128fbd6c3845140d566c99c7a27af2e2.jpg
